GL - SEA's

The Mineral Resources Act and other rules, regulations and guidelines stipulate a range of measures aimed at environmental protection, climate protection, and nature protection.

Environmental Impact Assessments Applications

submitted to the Bureau of Minerals and Petroleum to conduct offshore hydrocarbon exploration activities must be accompanied by an environmental impact assessment (EIA). The Bureau of Minerals and Petroleum draws on the expertise of the scientific institutions Danish National Environmental Research Institute and Greenland Institute for Natural Resources when assessing submitted EIAs. Prior to opening up new areas for hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation licensing rounds, a Strategic Environmental Impact Assessments (SEIA) for the region is prepared. The SEIA reports and research related hereto are conducted as a co-operation between National Environmental Research Institute, Greenland Institute of Natural Resources (GINR) and Bureau of Minerals and Petroleum (BMP).

SEIA for the Disko West area (offshore West Greenland)
SEIA for the Greenland part of the Baffin Bay area (offshore North West Greenland)
SEIA for the Greenland Sea area (offshore North East Greenland)
SEIA for the Greenland Sea area, supplement report - Aerial surveys of coastal seabirds and marine mammals

EIA for Seismic Activities

Guidelines to environmental impact assessment of seismic activities in Greenland Waters The “BMP’s guidelines for application, execution and reporting of offshore hydrocarbon activities (excluding drilling) in Greenland” stipulate that the licensee shall submit an environmental impact assessment as part of the application for approval of certain offshore exploration activities, including offshore seismic activities.
Examples of Environmental Impact Assessments reports for seismic activities:

EIA for 2D seismic survey Disko West Blocks 4 and 6, 2008
EIA for 2D seismic survey Disko West Block 8, 2010

Examples of Environmental Impact Assessments reports for site survey activities:

EIA for High Resolution Seismic Site Survey Programme for Eqqua, Licence 2008/11, Offshore West Greenland, 2011
EIA for High Resolution Seismic Site Survey Programme for Napariaq, Licence 2011/16, Offshore West Greenland, 2011

Manual for seabird and marine mammal survey on seismic vessels in Greenland (2011) To increase the knowledge of seabird and marine mammal distribution and abundance in Greenland
BMP has made it mandatory for seismic vessels operating in Greenland to collect seabird and
marine mammal observation data.

EIA for Exploration Drilling

The licensee shall submit an environmental impact assessment (EIA) as part of the application for approval of offshore exploration drilling activities.

Guidelines for preparing an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)

The guidelines are directed at licensees preparing an EIA for activities related to the exploration, development, production, decommissioning and transport of hydrocarbons offshore Greenland.

Examples of Environmental Impact Assessments reports for exploration drilling activities:

EIA for exploration drilling programme, wells 1 & 2, Sigguk Block, Disko West, 2010, submitted by Capricorn Greenland Exploration 1 Ltd.
EIA for exploration drilling programme, wells 3 & 4, Sigguk Block, Disko West, 2010, submitted by Capricorn Greenland Exploration 1 Ltd.

The Exploration Drilling Guidelines, May 2011 have been developed to assist operators planning to conduct drilling operations within Greenland by providing information and explanation of the requirements
contained in the Greenland Minerals Resources Act, and subordinate legislation.

EIA for Stratigraphic Drilling

BMP Guidelines for preparing an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report related to stratigraphic drilling offshore Greenland are meant as support for companies preparing environmental impact assessment of stratigraphic drilling activities offshore Greenland.
